Description for Myanmar
A republic located in the western part of the Indochina Peninsula in Southeast Asia. Its capital is Naypyidaw (formerly Yangon until 2006). It is bordered by Thailand and Laos to the east, China to the northeast, and India and Bangladesh to the west.
The central and southern parts of the country are tropical, while the north is temperate. The climate differs significantly between the south and north, but overall it is hot and humid.
Myanmar is a multi-ethnic nation. Nearly 70% of the total population are Bamar people living in the lowlands, while the remaining 30% consists of various ethnic minorities inhabiting the mountainous regions. About 5% are foreign Asians, including Indians and ethnic Chinese. Approximately 90% of the population are devout Buddhists.
One of the world’s leading rice-producing regions
Rice is the staple food for the Myanmar people. It is eaten daily alongside Myanmar-style curry, soup, salad, and vegetable dishes. Rice consumption is said to be three times that of Japan. Myanmar was once the world’s largest rice exporter.
