Overview of Kyoto
The capital of Kyoto Prefecture, located in the southern part of the prefecture. The imperial capital from 794 (Enryaku 13) to 1868 (Meiji 1).
In 794, during the reign of Emperor Kanmu, the capital was moved from Nara and Heiankyo was built. It prospered as the capital of the Ritsuryo state. During the Kamakura period, it also developed as an economic city. During the Muromachi period, the shogunate was established, and the northern part of Kyoto developed in particular, with the townspeople rising to prominence and playing an active role. It was reduced to ashes during the Onin War (1467–77) but was rebuilt through the efforts of the townspeople. Later, Toyotomi Hideyoshi carried out large-scale urban development. During the Edo period, it prospered centered on the textile industry in Nishijin and was counted among the three major cities alongside Edo (Tokyo) and Osaka. Although it lost its status as the imperial capital with the move to Tokyo, it remains world-famous as a tourist city with many ancient shrines and temples dating back to Heian-kyo.
