“Aoao” is a word formed by repeating the character for “blue” (青). It means “a state of being distinctly blue; a state that gives the impression of being entirely blue,” but it is often used to describe the vibrant new greenery and young leaves, or deep green hues, and is frequently used to describe landscapes and plants.
In fact, the Japanese of old did not have a distinct concept of the color green; they perceived the clear blue sky and green plants and trees as simply “blue.”
