Main Meaning of Uchiwa, It’s not just about the name of manga’s character or anime.
A tool used to fan oneself for cooling during summer or to shield against strong sunlight. Generally circular, though some have unique shapes like shibu-uchiwa, kyo-uchiwa, or gunbai-uchiwa.
Introduced to Japan from China during the Nara period, its use among the imperial court and nobility is evident from Shosoin relics, which include carvings depicting women holding uchiwa.
The pronunciation is “uchiwa,” though the original Chinese spelling upon introduction was “uchiha.”
In modern times, fans decorated with the name of a favorite idol or character are created for concerts and events, used for cheering and self-expression. Activities like “Oshikatsu” (fandom activities) also involve this.
Note: A folding fan used similarly for cooling is called a “sensu.”
Japanese Surnames
No person with this surname appears to exist. However, the surname “Kouchiwa” (小団扇) is found in about 50 people within Japan, though it is an extremely rare surname.
In the manga “Naruto,” the popular character “Uchiha Sasuke,” who becomes the protagonist’s first friend, has no existing kanji spelling for his name. However, the Uchiha clan logo on the back of his jacket resembles the shape of a common uchiwa.
