soft-shelled turtle in brushed Kanji スッポン 漢字
A general term for turtles belonging to the Softshell turtle family. It inhabits rivers throughout Japan except Hokkaido, the Korean Peninsula, China, and the eastern part of the Indochina Peninsula.
It has been edible since ancient times, and most of the soft-shelled turtles eaten in Japan are now cultivated. It is also used for medicinal purposes such as Chinese herbs.
