A place long famous for its hot spring resorts
A tourist hot spring city in eastern Shizuoka Prefecture, located near the center of the Izu Peninsula and facing Sagami Bay.
The name Ito is said to derive from its location east of Yu IZU ru kuni (the land where hot springs rise).
Ito’s Industries
Citrus cultivation is central. Orchards occupy about 50% of all farmland. Some are tourist citrus-picking gardens. The fishing industry was central from the Meiji period to the early Showa era but has since declined. Mackerel is the most common catch, and dried horse mackerel also serves as a tourist souvenir.
Sightseeing
It is a scenic location overlooking the Amagi Mountains to the west and Sagami Bay to the east, with most of the area designated as part of Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. There are many famous places and historic sites, centered around Ito Hot Springs, which has about 800 hot spring sources.
