Main meanings: Prefecture name and prefectural capital name

A prefecture located on the Pacific coast in the southeastern part of the Chubu region. Historically formed from the three provinces of Izu, Suruga, and Totomi. The provincial capital of Suruga Province was established here in ancient times. After the Nanboku-chō period, it became the castle town of the Imagawa clan and was called Sunpu or Fuchū. In the early Edo period, Tokugawa Ieyasu retired to Sunpu Castle, and the area prospered as Fuchu-juku, a post station on the Tōkaidō Road.
Shizuoka Prefecture is blessed with natural landscapes, including the World Heritage Site Mount Fuji, renowned Japanese tea production, Hamana Lake famous for eel farming, and the Shirogasaki Coast representing the Izu Geopark. The prefecture is also one of Japan’s leading hot spring regions, home to famous resorts like Atami Onsen, Ito Onsen, and Shuzenji Onsen.

Shizuoka as a Surname

Approximately 200 people nationwide bear the Shizuoka surname. It is a rare surname. Its origin relates to the Shizu clan. The Suwa Shrine Party exists. It signifies a quiet and peaceful land. It is also said to derive from “Shizuhatayama,” the location of Shizuoka Sengen Shrine.
It also derives from topography, meaning “from a quiet hill.” Its base is in Kandagata, Nogata City, Fukuoka Prefecture. It was formed by adding ‘Oka’ (hill) to the single-character surname “Shizuka” found in the Amami Islands of Kagoshima Prefecture. This is also said to be topographically derived.
The concentration of this surname in Fukuoka and Kagoshima Prefectures is attributed to topographical origins and has little relation to the prefecture name mentioned above.
