A city in western Hokkaido. The location of the Hokkaido Government offices.
The city name Sapporo originates from the Ainu word “Sato-poro” (dry, wide land).
The first snowfall occurs around late October, with permanent snow settling in December. Snowfall is heavy, with an annual average accumulation of approximately 600 cm observed. However, extensive snow removal and other snow countermeasures limit the impact on daily life.
Summer is characterized by the absence of a rainy season and minimal typhoon impact. Low humidity and cool mornings and evenings make it comfortable.
Sapporo’s Food
As Hokkaido‘s logistics hub, Sapporo receives freshly harvested vegetables, fruits, and fish from across the prefecture, fostering a rich food culture. Famous dishes include ramen, Genghis Khan barbecue, sushi/seafood, and soup curry.
Abundant Festivals and Events
As a city home to over a million people, Sapporo hosts numerous festivals and events of all sizes. With something happening almost year-round, visitors never lack for things to see. The Sapporo Snow Festival is particularly famous, drawing tourists from both Japan and abroad.
