It is also a kanji character used to represent the name of a country.
As a Japanese person, I find it strange that the first two characters of the word are “budou” (grape). It is the same kanji character used for the country Portugal. It is not the actual meaning of “budou,” but rather a kanji conversion of the syllable. Perhaps the Japanese people of old heard Portugal as sounding similar to “budou.”
Japanese said “Budoushu”.
