Niseko is a town located in Abuta District, Hokkaido.

The name “Niseko” comes from the Ainu language and means “steep cliff.” It is the collective name for Kutchan Town, Niseko Town, and Rankoshi Town, an area surrounded by numerous mountains, including Mount Yotei (also called Ezo Fuji), and the clear-flowing Shiribetsu River.
The Shiribetsu River (which has been ranked Japan’s clearest river multiple times) flows through the center of the town, joined by smaller rivers like the Konbu River, Niseko-Anbetsu River, and Makkari River.
It has a continental climate with an average temperature of 6.3°C (14.5°F). Winter snow depth can reach up to 200 cm (6.6 ft).
It is approximately 120 minutes by private car from Sapporo City or Chitose Airport, and about 90 minutes by private car from Otaru City.

High-quality snow and hot springs are popular

In recent years, it has gained attention as an international resort destination, enjoying high popularity and acclaim overseas.
Due to its world-class powder snow, Niseko’s ski resorts attract numerous tourists from both Japan and abroad.
Niseko has also long been known as a hot spring area, with numerous hot springs scattered throughout.
The feeling of soaking in a hot spring while gazing at the vast Hokkaido landscape during the cold season is truly special.
Some facilities offer day-trip bathing, making it a great way to soothe tired bodies after skiing or snowboarding.
Additionally, Niseko offers Hokkaido specialties like soup curry and Genghis Khan barbecue, as well as dairy products such as cheese and ice cream.
