What is Tanzanite?
Tanzanite was first discovered in the Merelani Mine located in the Arusha region of Tanzania, East Africa.
It is a stone formed when vanadium, a type of mineral, entered the rock through some process. Its most distinctive feature is its pleochroism, appearing blue to purple. This phenomenon is extremely rare, meaning blue tanzanite itself is not produced in many regions. Consequently, it is highly scarce and valued not only as a gemstone but also as a power stone.
Blue tanzanite is mined in the Tyrol region of Austria, North Carolina in North America, and Western Australia.
December Birthstone
Tanzanite’s gemstone meanings include “nobility,” “mystery,” “calmness,” “intelligence,” and “hope.”
Because it displays different colors depending on the viewing angle, it is also interpreted as a stone symbolizing change and flexibility.
It was recently added as Japan’s birthstone for December in 2021.
