The Origin of the “Morimoto” Surname

While surnames generally derive from geographical features near areas where trees grow naturally, some originate from place names.

Origin from Topography and Environment

“Mori” refers to a place where natural trees grow thickly. “Moto” means ‘below’ or “near.” Thus, it is thought to originate from living near a place where natural trees grew thickly.
Before the current wave of residential development, such places existed throughout the country. Consequently, the “Morimoto” surname is widely distributed nationwide, particularly common in the Kansai, Chugoku, and Shikoku regions.

Origin from Place Names

In Mie Prefecture, there is a place name “Morimoto” (present-day Ueno Morimoto-cho, Matsusaka City), and clans tracing their roots to this area exist. The “Morimoto clan” originating from this place name served the Ise daimyo, the Kitabatake clan, during the Warring States period, using Morimoto Castle as their base.
Additionally, there is an old place name “Morimoto” (Wani no Morimoto-ryo) in Tenri City, Nara Prefecture, which seems to have also been called Morimoto Shrine or Morimoto Shrine.
Approximately 130,000 people nationwide bear the Morimoto surname.
That’s roughly the capacity of the Narendra Modi Stadium in India.
