One of the first names for Japanese men.
It is rarely seen in modern male names. Modern names are mostly one or two kanji characters, and three-kanji names are relatively uncommon.
For men, adding “郎” (ro) was common since ancient times, similar to how “子” (ko) is added to female names. These are names like ‘太郎’ (Taro) or “一郎” (Ichiro) today.
Even today, there might be one person named Tanjiro somewhere in the world.
The second and third characters of this kanji, “治郎” (jiro), are names that likely still exist today. However, having “炭” (tan) as the first character makes it an extremely rare name.
炭 means charcoal.
The protagonist of the fictional manga Demon Slayer is named Tanjiro. His surname “Kamado” comes from a family that guards fire, and the name ‘Tanjiro’ means “the man who controls charcoal” – that is, “one who manipulates the raw material of fire and protects it.”
