“Love” is a foreign word in Japan
Historically, “love” is not a native Japanese word, but rather a Chinese word imported from China, known as a Sino-Japanese word. This fact illustrates that Japanese did not originally have words such as ‘love’ or “to love.” When there was a need to express the feeling of “love” or “to love,” in the past, Japanese relied on native Japanese words, using the noun “omoi” and the verb “omou.” For example, in The Pillow Book, Chapter 71, the verb ‘omou’ is cited as the antonym of “nikumu” (to hate).
