The first Kanji letter means basket.

A ball game in which two teams of five each throw the ball into the opponent’s basket in the court and compete for points. Also, the ball used for this competition.

Origin of the kanji

Basketball was invented by Canadian James Naismith.

He had envisioned a 45 cm square box as the goal, but since he couldn’t get one, he ended up attaching a peach basket to the balcony of the gymnasium instead.
This is how the name “basketball” came about.

The peach basket used as the goal was fragile, so it was quickly replaced with a metal cylindrical goal.

Similarly, in Japan, it is said that the kanji character was used because the ball is put into a “basket” (かご).
In Japanese, it is called “Ro kyu.”
