A ball game where teams compete to score points by carrying an oval ball into the opponent’s in-goal area. While the 15-a-side Rugby Union is the most common form, there are also 7-a-side (Sevens), 10-a-side (Tens) Rugby Union, and Rugby League (13-a-side).
Origins of Rugby
Modern rugby traces its origins to football played among the populace in England around the 12th century. This was a large-scale folk game involving many participants, known as folk football, mass football, or mob football, and was held as a festival event.
Explanation of the Calligraphy
The kanji in the upper section is “闘球” (tōkyū), which seems to convey the meaning of a fierce sport where players from both teams compete as if fighting.
Breaking down the characters, “闘” means fighting, and “球” means ball.
The English notation in the lower section is written in the “Maru-yose style”.
What's Maru-yose font?
Maru means circle or roundness, while Yose refers to traditional Japanese entertainment venues where people gather to watch performances. The calligraphy style used to write performers' names in these venues is called Yose Shotai. Designed to bring good fortune and attract crowds, it features heavy bold strokes with minimal spacing.
Maru also has another meaning: the Japanese words Marumaru and Marutto mean “all” or “everything.” We are attempting to preserve the old-fashioned feel while arranging it in a modern style.
